Eight questions to ask
- Are you insured? Ask for public liability insurance in the business’s name. It covers accidental damage to your home and belongings.
- How are cleaners vetted? Look for reference checks, right-to-work checks and training before anyone works in a client’s home.
- Will I get the same cleaner each time? Consistency means they learn your home and you know who has your key.
- What happens if my cleaner is off sick or on holiday? A company can usually send cover. A sole trader often can’t.
- What exactly is included? Agree a written checklist so nothing is assumed, then add extras such as ironing or inside the oven as you need them.
- Do you bring products and equipment? Ask about eco or fragrance-free products if anyone has allergies.
- How do you look after keys? Keys should be coded, never labelled with your address, or use a key safe.
- What if I’m not happy? A good company will come back and put it right, and make cancelling or rearranging simple.
Company or independent cleaner?
An independent cleaner can be cheaper per hour, but you may be taking on the role of an employer, and there’s nobody to cover holidays or sickness. A cleaning company handles insurance, vetting, cover and quality checks, so the price includes the admin you’d otherwise do yourself.
Check the reviews
Read recent Google reviews, and look for detail: names of cleaners, the type of clean and how problems were handled. A handful of specific, recent reviews is more telling than a big number of vague ones.
